Welcome to Wallyworld.
This program is set one of the Dolch popper word sets. The program
is a flashcard type of game (call it a game, kids like games) that is
designed to help kids learn to recognize words instantly without
having to sound them out. Because the words will be learned to "pop"
recognized, the child will become good readers. Research shows that
these wordds make up 75% of all words in the first grade reading
books and 65% of all other primary reading books. "These are words
(pronouns, adjectives, ect.) which cannot be learned from pictures,
yet must be learned if the child is to read with confidence."
The studies were done by Edward W. Dolch, Ph.D. some time ago.
To start Pop_Words just CLICK twice on the icon. To QUIT, just hit
any key on the keyboard. The program will run on any Amiga (only
512K required). The Program will start displaying the first word and
pause a second for the child to say the word, then the Amiga voice
will pronounce it for them. It will then go on to the next word. I
have included a method of keeping score, which my son really likes.
It is a simple score keeping for the words recognized and pronounced
correctly. When the child says the wor before the Amiga (or at the
same time) simply press the left mouse button to keep count of the
words the child gets corect. I find it best for me to do the score
keeping for the children and pronounce words they misunderstand but
but the children themselves could keep score. It is best to press the
button right after the Amiga pronounces the word to keep accurate
score. Presummably one could keep score by those words missed, but
hey, I like to score ACHIEVMENT.
At the end of the game the score is displayed and a congratulatory
message is expressed.
This program is not public domain but is freely distributable. If you
find this program useful and would like to have more educational
software for your Amiga, please write me a note and give me some
suggestions.
